Amanda & David

Amanda and David spent a lot of time with their mother as she was their teacher as well as their mom. The children told Mommy’s Light volunteers that they loved to play board and card games with their mother and that they wanted to continue to have a family game night.

The Mommy’s Light volunteers selected a wonderful array of games for the children based on their ages and personalities. To top the evening off, Mommy’s Light included delicious game night snacks and beverages.

Alexis

Thirteen year old Alexis is passionate about continuing her tradition of going to see the Nutcracker ballet in December. Alexis’s mom, who died from breast cancer, always arranged for her family to attend the Pennsylvania Ballet’s performance of the Nutcracker at Christmas time. Alexis and her sister, Emily, shared many details about their tradition, including dressing up in their Christmas outfits and touring around Philadelphia to enjoy all of the decorations.

In 2004, Mommy’s Light volunteers arranged for Alexis, Emily and their father to see the Nutcracker and take a back stage tour.

In February 2010, Alexis spoke at the Hearts for Megan event:

"The women who volunteer with Mommy's Light truly understand how important it is for me to continue this tradition and celebrate the life of my mom.  Even though she is not here to experience it with me anymore, going to the Nutcracker every year is a way that I keep the memory of my mom alive, and Mommy's Light helps me do that.

...Although they can't take the place of my mom, and they surely never tried to, they helped me to honor her memory and celebrate her life by continuing the tradition that she started."

Rebekah

Rebekah’s mom, Sharon, was in the final stages of breast cancer when her husband, Mark, called Mommy’s Light. Within 24 hours of being contacted, a Mommy’s Light volunteer met with the couple at the hospital. Together they mapped out a plan for Rebekah, then age 2, to plant flowers each year in honor of Sharon. Sharon died a few hours after the Mommy’s Light volunteer left the hospital.

The following January, when Rebekah turned three, she asked Mommy’s Light for flowers to plant in the spring. Mommy’s Light provided Rebekah with flowers, a hand decorated wheelbarrow and tools for planting. Mommy’s Light looks forward to serving Rebekah each year until she turns 18.

LeGrand

LeGrand’s mother, Laura, loved decorating for Christmas. Each holiday season, LeGrand’s home was transformed into a Christmas wonderland, complete with a huge tree, numerous poinsettias, wreaths, and stockings hung with care. LeGrand loved the magic and sparkle in his home and in his mother’s eyes. He asked Mommy’s Light volunteers if it would be possible to help him continue their Christmas decorating tradition.

Mommy’s Light elves made it through a snowstorm to deliver a huge tree, numerous poinsettias and all the trimmings. They were touched by the magic and sparkle in LeGrand’s eyes as he helped unload the decorations.

Ali

Ali’s mother, Robin, died in January 2003 of pulmonary fibrosis - hardening of the lungs. Robin was only 38 years old and Ali was only 8 years old. Ali fondly remembers going to the park with her mother and playing on the swings. She also loved going to McDonald’s afterwards! When Mommy’s Light volunteers first visited Ali in 2004, she had not been back to the park since her mother’s death.

Mommy’s Light arranged for Ali, her father, grandparents and a few other family members, to share a beautiful park outing in celebration of Ali’s mom. Mommy’s Light will continue to make these arrangements once a year, each year, until Ali turns 18.
